Inspect reusable skull pins prior to each use. To maintain proper fixation, pins should be equal length. Broken, dull, or bent pins should be replaced. It is recommended that a spare set of pins always be kept available. Prior to pin impingement, turn the 80 lbs. torque screw until engagement mark on the piston shaft is visible just beyond the skull clamp base. Failure to do this may cause difficulty in engaging or disengaging the skull pins. Avoid the areas of the frontal sinus, temporal fossa, major blood vessels, nerves, previously restored or abnormally thin bone. Make sure the trajectory of the single pin in the skull clamp extension intersects the center of the patient's head and the rocker arm to correctly secure the patient's head into the skull clamp. 60 lbs. of pressure is recommended for adults. 40 lbs. of pressure is recommended for children. All pressure settings are at the user's discretion. Never exceed 80 lbs. of pressure. make certain to always support the patient's head when unlocking this system or any similar device. Failure to do so may result in serious patient injury. Always be sure all joints and locking mechanisms are secure after completing adjustments. Failure to do so may result in serious patient injury. Before fully tightening always be certain the sunburst teeth on all joints of the MAYFIELD headrest system are the same size and mesh properly. Failure to do so may damage these joints. Do not use petroleum based lubricants. Do not steam sterilize. Plastic components may be damaged by heat. Remove skull clamp extension from the skull clamp base to prevent any unnecessary injury when removing skull pins.
